All file types accepted
You can upload any file type to Filently. There are no restrictions on what you can file.
How Filently processes your file depends on whether it can extract text from it:
Full text analysis
The following file types are fully analyzed. Filently extracts the text content (using OCR for scanned documents and images) and uses it along with the filename to suggest a name and folder.
PDF documents
PDF (.pdf)
Images
JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg)
PNG (.png)
WebP (.webp)
HEIC (.heic)
TIFF (.tiff)
Microsoft Office
Word (.docx), PowerPoint (.pptx), Excel (.xlsx)
Word Template (.dotx), PowerPoint Template (.potx), Excel Template (.xltx)
OpenDocument formats
Text (.odt), Presentation (.odp), Spreadsheet (.ods)
Rich Text Format
RTF (.rtf)
Google Workspace (via Inbox Folder)
Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides
Note: Google Workspace files are only supported through Inbox Folder Watching. Since they already live in Google Drive, there is no need to upload them. Simply place or move them into your inbox folder and Filently will process them automatically.
All other file types
Files that Filently cannot extract text from (such as ZIP archives, audio, video, or any other format) are still accepted and filed. In this case, Filently uses the original filename and your custom filing instructions to suggest a name and folder.
Since there is less context to work with, AI confidence may be lower for these files. You can always review and adjust the suggestions before filing.
Maximum file size
Size limits apply to file types with full text analysis. Other file types have no size restriction (they are uploaded directly to Google Drive without passing through Filently's servers).
Email forwarding has a separate limit of 25 MB per email (including all attachments) and only supports text-analyzed file types. See Email Forwarding for details.
How text extraction works
Filently extracts the content of your documents to determine proper naming and filing.
Scanned documents and images are fully supported. Filently uses OCR (optical character recognition) to extract text from scanned PDFs, photographed documents, and image files.
Files with little or no text (such as photos, screenshots, or blank pages) are also processed. When there is not enough text to analyze, Filently uses the original filename to determine how to name and file the document. If you have set up custom filing instructions, those are applied as well.
Non-text file types (such as ZIP, CSV, audio, or video) skip text extraction entirely and are classified based on the filename and your custom filing instructions.
